Hungary’s a Victor Orban, Europe’s longest serving leader and a close ally of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, has conceded defeat in a landmark election.

The opposition is on course for a landslide win, sweeping Orban from power after 16 years in office in what could prove to be a pivotal election for both Hungary and the European Union.

Opposition leader Peter Magyar, who promised a closer ties with the EU, is now set to be the country’s new Prime Minister.

Jubilation outside the headquarters of Hungary’s triumphant Tisza party. After 16 years, Victor Orban has been ousted from government, despite changing election regulations here to favor his party.

He was quick to admit defeat, even before all the votes have been counted.

The result of the election, while not complete, is understandable and clear, he said, the result is painful for us, but clear.

Supporters of his political rival, Peter Magyar, now expected to become Prime Minister, could hardly believe it.

I’ve seen you smiling and smiling and smiling.

It is, it’s a historic moment, so we’ve been waiting for this for several years and it’s, it’s here and you can feel it with the crowds, the people and everyone, it’s just like, it’s a moment of like truth, of transparency and of change.

And I’m feeling very ecstatic.

I’m feeling, I’m feeling very excited, I don’t know, it’s just a, a communal feeling of like, ecstatic, of like everyone enjoying their time, about everyone feeling the, the need for change.

These supporters of Peter Magyar are so excited.

Victor Orban has conceded defeat.

They’re overlooking the Hungarian parliament and they say they’re looking forward to introducing new laws and dramatically changing the way this country’s run.

We have won the legitimacy to build a working and more humane Hungary for every single Hungarian citizen.

It is a huge slap in the face for Victor Orban.

Prime Minister here for the last 16 years, accused at home and abroad, particularly in Brussels, of democratic backsliding.

Compromising the neutrality of Hungary’s judiciary, state media, and individual rights.

His defeat is also a blow for his best buddies abroad, Donald Trump, who endorsed him repeatedly before this election, admiring him as a hero of the Christian nationalist right.

And Vladimir Putin, who benefited from Victor Orban delaying EU sanctions against Russia and blocking much needed loans for Ukraine.

Earlier this evening, Peter Magyar expressed cautious optimism victory could be his.

He’s a conservative, formerly from Victor Orban’s party, but he’s promised to loosen Hungary’s ties with Russia now, while mending bridges with the EU.

Tonight, his supporters say their top priorities are to rebuild Hungary’s sagging economy and public services, improving standards of living here.

But first of all, to celebrate.
